In one of my last blog entries I talked about managing your project car. Seems not everyone has a project car. Let’s fix that.
My personal
poison
choice of cars for “project” status are currently VWs. Early watercooled in particular. Not everyone would agree and I get that we all have our own reasons for picking something that will suck the cash out of our accounts. Reader
jz70wagon
however reached out for suggestions.
Can we help him? Do you have suggestions for a under-$2000 project-capable car? Feel free to ignore the fact that it’ll cost a lot more later. A lot more.
Oran Sands drinks only the good stuff. When he can afford it. Which given his taste in project cars means his liver’s not exactly in trouble.

Do we have to adhere to the
“VWs. Early watercooled in particular”
preference?

Not at all! I’m interested to see what others have to recommend.

http://westmd.craigslist.org/cto/5074206103… ‘72 Super Beetle for $850.
No motor, but for $850, you should still be able to get one and still be under $2,000.

1996 Crown Vic. $1500. But, it’s a Panther, and should still have some life left.

What about a Nova? I’d go pre-’75 to avoid any emissions hangups. They are reasonably sized and will do anything from cruise to serious drag racing. I think a fair number of Camaro parts interchange so you might even be able to make it handle. Parts are available and if you can’t have fun with a SBC then you can’t have fun.

My sub $2k project car is also my daily driver at the moment: a 1987 Honda CRX Si. It’s alot of fun.

Well there are a couple more things needed to be defined. Does he want a classic to restore? Does he want to go fast? or Does he just want a unique car?
Classic? Well not the best classic but still its clean. 66 Corvair
https://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/5070748361…
Fast? There are tons of 80-90s Camaros and Mustangs for that
Unique? Here is a MK2 GTI https://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/5078510434…

G-bodies! I picked mine up for $1000, running and driving with working A/C!

This is what I would get. I bet if you had cash in hand you could score it for way less than the asking price.

I just picked one up for $250.00! The car is a '90 Dodge Colt, which I'll get to once the Galant is done!

I’ve never had a project car with working AC. Sighs....

Had a friend with one. He had a Formula Ford engine in the back with some “massaging”. Ran like stink.

I did forget my meds this morning. I took them a couple hours ago. I may be certifiably insane... My taste has been described as esoteric. The car I most want is a 1973 Saab 96 as a DD. Then I want to get a 1962 or newer Renault Dauphine, a Renault 5 is my 2nd choice.

Ahh, my first project car was almost a Saab 96 with a V4 (broken camshaft). Loved the looks of the car. Got a 99 later.

You'll get one some day.

Since it’s a project car, I would put forth the argument that older is better because of simplicity. Air cooled vws are mechanically simple and can be acquired for less than 2k.

I’ll sell you my MR2 for 700!
